About This Research Directory
-
At Freedom Integrative Cancer Care, we believe patients should have access to clear, credible information when exploring their care options. This directory brings together published research on Viscum album (European mistletoe), including studies examining its use in supportive cancer care, quality of life, safety, and specific cancer types. We’ve organized the research to make it easier to explore, with links to the original published studies so you can review the evidence directly.
How to Use This DirectoryEach study includes a brief plain-language summary highlighting key findings and important limitations. Select “View Study on PubMed” to read the original publication and explore the research in greater detail.

Reviews & Meta-Analyses
Explore broader reviews of the clinical evidence surrounding Viscum album, including research on survival, quality of life, safety, and its potential role alongside conventional cancer care.
-
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined controlled studies evaluating survival among cancer patients receiving Iscador, a fermented Viscum album extract. The analysis found an association between adjunctive Iscador treatment and improved survival across the studies reviewed. The authors also noted important limitations, including that none of the included studies were blinded and that outcomes varied between cancer types.

This 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 26 publications evaluating mistletoe extracts and quality of life in people with cancer. Overall, the analysis reported improvements in global quality of life and several individual measures, including pain and nausea. The authors noted considerable differences between the studies and identified a high or concerning risk of bias in many of them.

This review examined preclinical and clinical research surrounding the use of mistletoe extracts in cancer care. The authors reported that evidence regarding survival remains inconsistent, while findings related to quality of life and the tolerability of conventional cancer treatments have generally been more positive. The review also highlights the need for continued scientific evaluation of mistletoe therapy.

This review explores how compounds found in Viscum album may interact with immune responses and cellular pathways involved in cancer. It examines proposed immunomodulatory mechanisms and their potential relevance to anticancer therapy, providing an overview of the biological research behind mistletoe's use in integrative oncology.

This systematic review evaluated controlled clinical studies investigating European mistletoe extracts and quality of life in people with cancer. The authors reported potential benefits for quality of life and reductions in some side effects associated with conventional treatments, while identifying fatigue as an area warranting further investigation.

This systematic review evaluated clinical evidence surrounding the efficacy and safety of mistletoe preparations used alongside conventional cancer care. The authors found evidence suggesting potential quality-of-life benefits and described supportive mistletoe therapy as generally well tolerated, while also noting limitations in the available research.

Breast Cancer
Explore clinical research examining mistletoe therapy in breast cancer care, including studies on quality of life, treatment-related symptoms, disease progression, and long-term outcomes.

This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial followed 352 breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Patients who received standardized mistletoe extract reported improvements in physical, emotional and functional well-being compared with the placebo group. The treatment was generally well tolerated, with mild local injection-site reactions reported in some patients.

This randomized pilot study evaluated mistletoe extract alongside chemotherapy in women with early-stage breast cancer. Quality-of-life measures generally favoured the mistletoe group, with statistically significant differences reported across several measures. The study was relatively small, and the authors described it as a pilot study intended to inform further research.

This five-year follow-up examined recurrence and metastasis among early-stage breast cancer patients who had participated in a randomized study of mistletoe therapy alongside chemotherapy. Six of 28 patients in the mistletoe group and eight of 29 controls experienced relapse or metastasis. The difference was not statistically significant, and the researchers concluded that additional mistletoe therapy during chemotherapy did not influence recurrence or metastasis rates within the five-year follow-up period.

This randomized, open-label pilot study evaluated a European mistletoe extract alongside chemotherapy in women with breast cancer. Patients receiving mistletoe therapy reported better results across several quality-of-life measures compared with the control group. Rates of neutropenia were similar between the groups, and the authors noted that the open-label design was an important limitation.

This large observational cohort study followed more than 1,400 patients with primary, non-metastatic breast cancer receiving conventional cancer treatment, with or without complementary mistletoe extract. The mistletoe group experienced fewer reported adverse reactions attributed to conventional therapy and improvements in several disease- and treatment-related symptoms. The researchers also reported an association with longer survival; however, as an observational rather than randomized trial, the findings cannot establish that mistletoe treatment caused the difference in survival.

These prospective matched-pair cohort studies investigated long-term Iscador therapy in breast cancer patients, examining survival, disease progression and psychosomatic self-regulation. The researchers reported favourable survival and disease-progression outcomes in some comparisons involving mistletoe treatment. The evidence included both randomized and non-randomized cohorts with relatively small matched groups, which should be considered when interpreting the results.

This prospective study followed 270 breast cancer patients receiving mistletoe therapy during adjuvant chemotherapy in routine clinical practice. Quality-of-life measures remained relatively stable during chemotherapy and improved following treatment. Because the study did not include a comparable untreated control group, the results show how patients changed over time but cannot determine how much of that change was attributable specifically to mistletoe therapy.
